Nearly three weeks ago, Romie set up a great project to merge sound with image. Teams of two or three were asked to choose a work of art from the Museum collection to convey through sound. Lists of sounds were made, then sounds were collected using ipods with digital voice recorders and freesound.org, and finally sounds were compiled and edited using Audacity, a free online editing software. I’ve been meaning to post the original sound designs created that day! Here they are – with the exception of the Jasper Johns piece (image needed and coming soon!)

Today we learned new techniques and technical terms we need to know while shooting our film. I think it’s safe to say that Rae and I are pretty pumped about this project. We’ve got a solid script and we’re working our way smoothly through Pre-Production. Learning all of these new things is extremely exciting, and it’s giving me Ideas for my own personal films. Some of the terms we learned to day are POV (point of view) which is when the camera is acting as the actors eyes’. We also learned OS (over the shoulder) This is when the camera is looking over one actors shoulder recording another actor; it’s very common in todays media. We also learned many other cool terms like Full Shot, Macro shots… ect. I can’t wait until we jump into Production!

This past Saturday we viewed several works of art that are part of special programming featured at the DMA this summer. The film shorts that we create in our project will be based on one or several of these works, which represent some of the oldest and newest master works in the collection. Follow the link below to view images of artworks in an online gallery. You can also visit the DMA website, type in the object name or artist, and pull up some basic information about the work of art.

So there we were back again in the tech lab last Saturday ready to share our passion for film. A selection of excerpts follows:
Conduit to discovery – the man – don’t make an edgy movie just to be edgy – cheesy monologues – never regret, it wastes time – tackle a subject – caffeinated beverages in plenty and within reach – film taught me who I am – to put rules to filmmaking is absurd and counterproductive – an unaware person can be your best actor – all music used in films will be played by bands we’ve never heard of – risk – experiment – messy – I stand for what I stand
These are simply glimpses into the depths of thought that everybody captured and shared. Soon, we’ll have all manifestos up online in text and perhaps in video. A creative discussion about the good and bad in film followed the sharing of manifestos. Then, a review of the DMA project and a close look at the works of art that may serve as inspiration. Pollock, David, Oedipus, Emma-O, the Cabinet, and Orpheus seemed to stir the most minds. More words and work on these to come…. Finally, the afternoon rounded out with a peek at the amazing work of Gia, Alex, Frieda, Monica, and Romie on the BTWHSPVA dance project related to the Eliasson exhibition, and a consideration of the relationship between sound and image. In this case the beautiful minimalist composition prevails over jazz.
